Killed along with two other journalists, Mohammad Salah Qeshta and Anas Ghunaim, in an Israeli drone strike that targeted a car in Al-Zahraa City in central Gaza, during a filming mission documenting relief efforts at a newly established camp by the Egyptian Relief Committee. The vehicle was clearly displaying the Egyptian Relief Committee’s logo.

Civil Defense spokesman Mahmoud Basal said, "The journalists were performing a field photography mission in Netzarim (using a drone), while documenting the conditions of camps supervised by the Egyptian committee". He added that the journalists were wearing distinctive press clothing.

The IDF spun the massacre saying its troops "identified several suspects who operated a drone affiliated with Hamas in the central Gaza Strip, in a manner that posed a threat to their safety," and then "struck the suspects who activated the drone."

Abdul-Raouf Shaat was a Palestinian freelance photo and video journalist who regularly contributed to Agence France-Presse (AFP). Although he was not on an AFP assignment at the time of the strike, colleagues and the agency described him as a deeply committed journalist and a valued member of the press community covering Gaza. AFP issued a statement mourning his death and calling for a full investigation, emphasizing his professional dedication and the danger faced by journalists in Gaza. He had also worked for years as a photographer for CBS News and other outlets.

He was murdered 13 days after his wedding and was eager to meet his firstborn. The latter was born born on October 15, 2026 and named after him.
